Rain has been given a dressing down for going out with South Korea's sweetheart, Kim Tae-hee, while on compulsory military service - but without his army hat. A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said on January 3, 2013 that Rain, 30, one of South Korea's best known stars, had admitted the uniform violation. His punishment will be decided next week.

MOSCOW | Thu Jan 3, 2013 6:30am EST

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has granted citizenship to Gerard Depardieu, the French movie star who quit his homeland to avoid a tax hike on the rich, the Kremlin said on Thursday.

The "Cyrano de Bergerac" star moved across the border to Belgium last year to avoid the tax increase planned by Socialist President Francois Hollande and Putin said he would be welcome to Russia.

"If Gerard really wants to have either a residency permit in Russia or a Russian passport, we will assume that this matter is settled and settled positively," Putin told a news conference last month.

The Kremlin's website said on Thursday that Putin had signed a decree granting Depardieu citizenship. The wording of the statement suggested the 63-year-old actor had applied for it. An assistant to Depardieu declined to comment.

France's Constitutional Council last month blocked the planned 75 percent tax rate on income over 1 million euros ($1.32 million) - but Hollande plans to propose differently worded legislation which will "still ask more of those who have the most".

Bazinga! TV's 'Big Bang Theory' all abuzz over new bee
Jan 3rd 2013, 01:22

LOS ANGELES | Wed Jan 2, 2013 8:22pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Big Bang Theory" physicist Dr. Sheldon Cooper has a buzzy new claim to fame. The geeky TV character, who counts Britain's Stephen Hawking among his online friend, has had a species of bee named after his favorite catch phrase - Bazinga!

Brazilian biologist Andre Nemesio said he named a species of Brazilian orchid bee 'Euglossa bazinga' in honor of "the clever, funny, 'nerd' character Sheldon Cooper" because the bee had tricked scientists for some time with its similarity to other species.

Nemesio published his paper last month in Zootaxa, a journal for worldwide zoological taxonomists.

Steven Molaro, one of the executive producers of "The Big Bang Theory" said on Wednesday that the CBS comedy was "always extremely flattered when the science community embraces our show."

"Sheldon would be honored to know that Euglossa bazinga was inspired by him. In fact, after ‘Mothra' and griffins, bees are his third-favorite flying creatures," Molaro said.

"The Big Bang Theory" - a comedy about a group of brilliant but socially awkward scientists - is one of the most popular comedies on U.S. television, attracting about 18 million viewers an episode.

Actor Jim Parsons has won two Emmys for his lead performance as Cooper.

French prisoners use table leg to flee 14th century jail

COLMAR, France | Wed Jan 2, 2013 2:12pm EST

COLMAR, France (Reuters) - Three prisoners used a table leg to pierce a hole in the roof of their cell in a 14th century French penitentiary and escape in the early hours of New Year's Day, a regional prosecutor said on Wednesday.

The three climbed onto the roof of the Colmar prison in eastern France and from there entered an adjoining courthouse, where they fled through a side door.

The escape highlighted overcrowding and the advanced state of disrepair of an institution originally built in 1316 as a convent, according to prosecutor Bernard Lebeau.

"It appears that the ceilings in the cells are made of a crumbly material that was attacked with a makeshift tool made of objects from the cell itself, notably a table leg," he told journalists in Colmar.

The prisoners, aged 19 to 24, had been jailed on charges of assault and vandalism. Two were detained awaiting trial while the third was serving a two-year term.

Poor conditions at the Colmar prison were flagged last week in an independent report commissioned by a lawyer, who said he would sue to make local authorities repair the facility.

Armed robbers hit Paris Apple store
Jan 2nd 2013, 15:04

PARIS | Wed Jan 2, 2013 10:04am EST

PARIS (Reuters) - Armed robbers targeted an Apple Inc store in central Paris on New Year's Eve, taking thousands of euros (dollars) worth of goods, a police official said on Tuesday.

The robbery took place at about 9 p.m. (2.00 p.m. ET) on Monday, three hours after closing time at one of Apple's flagship stores behind the Paris Opera which sells products ranging from iPhones and iPads to Mac computers.

The police official declined to comment on reports the thieves walked away with about 1 million euros ($1.32 million) of loot, saying the company was still evaluating the loss.

Christophe Crepin from the police union UNSA told reporters four masked and armed individuals forced their way into the shop and afterwards escaped in a van.

"They were well prepared. As the majority of police were busy watching the Champs Elysees (for New Year's Eve celebrations), the robbers took advantage of this opportunity," he said.

Cyprus apologizes to Egypt over envoy's footwear row
Jan 2nd 2013, 14:51

NICOSIA | Wed Jan 2, 2013 9:51am EST

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Cyprus apologized to the Egyptian ambassador on Wednesday after a fracas with police over security screening of her footwear at the island's main airport.

Egyptian ambassador Menha Mahrous Bakhoum was involved in an argument with police when she was asked to undergo security checks to enter a departure terminal on December 29, where she was seeing off members of her family.

Cypriot media reported the ambassador agreed to undergo security screening but objected to removing her boots. In a heated debate that followed, media reported, a police officer was slapped and the ambassador was manhandled by police.

An apology released by Cyprus on Wednesday lauded its "brotherly relations" with Egypt. Cyprus shares a common sea border with Egypt in an area thought to be rich in oil and gas.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs publicly and sincerely expresses its regret and apologizes over the treatment of the Ambassador," Cypriot Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Markoullis said in a written statement.

Treatment of the ambassador was not consistent with the ambassador's individual rights or her diplomatic status, the minister said.
